5. OBJECTIVES
The last twenty years of territorial transformation in Spain were accompanied by the physical expansion of urbanization processes, characterized by “colonization” with spatial discontinuities of rural space, excessive and often uncontrolled consumption of land, and the overcoming of traditional administrative boundaries.

More than 36 million Spaniards already live in Urban Areas, 80.7% of the population, and in them we find an even greater proportion of their jobs and economic activities. The consequences of this increase in relationships in increasingly larger and more urbanized spaces encourage the process of diffusion of the city in the territory, and a new form of settlement in which more and more inhabitants reside in spaces located between cities and towns that bring together urban areas.

The challenges that these changes pose are already evident for the reconciliation of work and family life, for the environment, for energy efficiency, pollution and waste management, for the planning and management of infrastructure and public services.

The territorial fragmentation generated by this process increased the surface of artificial land (mostly urbanized) by 29.5%. To which we must add social fragmentation, discrimination based on economic income and the increase in the difference in quality of life depending on the situation of the place of residence.

This second edition of the DIÁLOGOS proposed by the group of scholarship holders from the Barrié Foundation aims to offer a meeting point for reflection on another topic of social interest. If in DIÁLOGOS01 we debate the improvement of Galician research capacity, this time we do so on the organization of the territory where most of its inhabitants live.
The debate allows the meeting of scholarship holders from different disciplines with the agents who are making decisions on the topics to be discussed, promoting the exchange of ideas, bringing the activities carried out by their scholarship holders closer to our society, creating opinion and transmitting part of the experience acquired in our training abroad.

Debating the organization of our urban areas should make us reflect on the urban model we have, what its flaws are, and how we could make it more socially, environmentally and economically cohesive so that it has an impact on improving the quality of life of Galicians.

The debate has an integrative global perspective that should help understand central issues for territorial and urban sustainability such as the relationships and interdependencies between the different parts of urban areas; between large cities, small ones and rural centers. Assessing the prominence of the new functions of the territories, the role of the city in the agglomeration and in the territory, or the environmental effects of the generalization of the dispersed city model that consumes land indiscriminately and comes into conflict with life in community and the values of the compact city.

These and other topics will be the subject of a multidisciplinary debate, so that they help explain the future of our life as a community, highlighting our potential and observing strategies that encourage development without compromising social, cultural and territorial diversity.
